Pohlkamp has written of a woman Master of poisons who "exists on the edge of a blade." This is a novel that I will call not just beautifully written but--after I sat up until two a.m to finish it--unforgettable. Our author is clearly a Master of fiction and I am anxious to see her next work. What I think readers will want to know is that she writes a rarely clear and fine prose, and that she has clearly done careful research on poisons and on Tudor England. Obviously one expects accuracy from a NASA flight controller, but, I think, not necessarily good writing....And if ricin was not really discovered and used by poisoners back in the 1500s,, well, it might have been. One small, maybe carping comment. She did not really have to set her book in an English county called "Gaulshire." Why not something more English, like for example Hardy's Wessex? But everything else feels, looks, smells as England must have, five hundred years ago.

The novel was published by Filles Vertes, a press in Idaho that, I read online, is relatively new. The author and press have created in Apricots and Wolfsbane a very handsome book.

Apricots and Wolfsbane KM Pohlkamp 9781946802026 Books Reviews

I loved this novel. I am a fan of historical fiction and I found this to be one of the most entertaining, albeit dark, tales of the Tudor era that I have read. The first person narration was captivating as it draws the reader into the workings of the mind of poison master, Lavinia. She is an impressively strong female; intelligent, loyal, resilient and fiercely independent. The story is not at all predictable and the pacing is perfect. Highly recommend.
Outside of my normal reading genre, I was intrigued to expand my library to new works and read this historical fiction novel based on a friend’s recommendation. I appreciated the author’s dedication to interwinding chemistry throughout the storyline of the main character and this approach is what kept my interest to read the book in full. I felt some of the events were able to be predicted ahead of time while others left me pondering what is going to happen next. I did like how the author offers recommended book club discussion points at the end and can see how this novel would be a good choice for one.
I totally enjoyed this fast-paced, well-written, dark, suspenseful first novel by K.M. Pohlkamp. While not normally and historical fiction reader, this book was so good that I may have to rethink that position. I fear that K.M. has spoiled me for other authors, though, since her writing is so good. The plot has fabulous twists and turns that keep you turning the pages to find out what comes next. The main character is an assassin and yet the author presents her in a way that makes you really like her, despite your better judgement. And the author somehow gets you to be annoyed with the priest for not wanting to hear Lavinia's confession, even though he was totally justified. Here's hoping Ms. Pohlkamp has already started on her second book.
I read this book without knowing much about the era or the profession and was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to become engrossed in Lavinia Maud's world. Pohlkamp does an excellent job of fleshing out the characters and provides understandable motives for the protagonist as well as the antagonists. The book is a quick read, not so much because it is short, but because once you start the book, you won't want to put it down. Each assassination proved suspenseful, an impressive feat considering how many different assassinations there are in this one story. I will definitely be reading the story again and would recommend the story to anyone interested in stories with strong female characters and rich historical settings.
I have to admit that I was reluctant to read a story about a Tudor era assassin who takes pride in her work, yet, I read it anyway and was very glad I did. I really enjoyed this story. It was beautifully told, and thoroughly researched. I couldn’t help admiring the heroine’s strength and determination to live life in a man’s world on her own terms. Apricots and Wolfsbane is a great read. I highly recommend it to fans who love historical thrillers.

K.M. Pohlkamp’s debut novel showcases her true talent as a historical fiction author. If you enjoy descriptive settings that paint a vivid picture of the Tudor era, then this book is for you. Following Lavinia Maud in her quest to create an elusive poison, the author takes you through the mindset of an assassin who allows no soul to get in her way, including her own. While I did find difficulty in connecting to the main character's motive, Pohlkamp delivers a lingering question throughout the story that kept my interest mildly piqued. Will Lavinia formulate her potion in time, or will she become the next murder victim?
The plot and pacing of this novel were excellent. The ending in particular carried powerful emotion and taut tension. Lavinia's moral conflicts resonated, and the dichotomy between her love of killing and her religious faith really drew me in. It's rare to find an anti-heroine written so well.

The book did suffer from a number of grammatical mistakes and misused words, though sometimes these had hilarious results.

That said, I highly recommend it. I've never read anything like this before.
