I received this book as a birthday present, and what a gift it was! Those Who Favor Fire grabs the reader's attention and holds it until the very end, which comes all too soon! This expertly-woven tale is about a small Pennsylvannia town, the coal fire that rages beneath it, and how its inhabitants deal with their fears. Interesting and well-developed characters, short chapters, and great imagery make it a very fast read. I hope we'll again meet Rachel, Joe and those memorable inhabitants of Belle Haven whom we've come to know so well. Thank you, Lauren, for such a wonderful first novel. I'm looking forward to your next.

Great story and easy to read. It has a lot of twists with an unexpected ending.
I thought this was a beautiful novel. It is loosely based on Centralia, Pennsylvania where a fire burns underneath the town due to a coal fire. The town can't put it out and slowly the town dies as people are forced to moved away. A strange couple form a strong bond though. Not your typical novel. I loved it.

This book is a certain base line to measure Lauren Wolk's development toward much better writing in "Beyond the Bright Sea". I gave this a 4 only because "Beyond“ showed her gifts as a writer were there but needed development past Fire. If "Fire" is your first Wolk book don't quit on her - move on to "Beyond the Bright Sea" , a truly beautiful story told by a very gifted writer.
